The Reflection Bench
A Place to Pause, Rest, and Take Stock
Not every part of the journey requires action. Sometimes what we need most is a moment to stop, breathe, and notice where we are. To look back at how far we have travelled, to acknowledge what we have carried, and to consider what we might need for the road ahead.
The Reflection Bench represents those moments of pause.
In a world that often encourages us to keep going, find solutions, and move on, counselling can offer something different: a space to slow down and simply be with your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
You may find yourself here when:
Life feels overwhelming or busy
You are facing a difficult decision
You need space to process a recent experience
You feel uncertain about the next step
You are adjusting to change or transition
You have been caring for others and neglecting yourself
You want to understand yourself more deeply
You need permission to rest without feeling guilty
A Different Kind of Progress
Many people come to counselling believing they need to have a clear problem to solve or a specific goal to achieve.
Sometimes counselling is about that.
At other times, it is about creating space to reflect, gain perspective, and reconnect with yourself. Insight often emerges when we stop pushing for answers and allow ourselves time to listen to what is happening beneath the surface.
The Reflection Bench reminds us that pausing is not the same as standing still.
Rest, reflection, and self-awareness are important parts of any journey.
Counselling Can Help You To:
Make sense of your thoughts and feelings
Gain clarity around difficult decisions
Reflect on life experiences and relationships
Explore patterns, values, and beliefs
Recognise your strengths and resources
Develop greater self-awareness
Create space for self-care and restoration
Consider what you need moving forward
The Bench - A Place For Self-reflection
The bench on the roadmap is a place of compassion rather than judgement.
There is no expectation to have everything figured out. No pressure to rush towards solutions. No requirement to be stronger, busier, or more productive.
It simply offers a place to sit for a while.
A place to reflect on where you have been, where you are now, and where you might choose to go next. Sometimes the most important step on a journey is allowing yourself a moment to rest.
Helpful Resources
Every person's experience is unique, but understanding what you're experiencing can often make it feel a little less overwhelming. The resources below explain some of the ideas and models I regularly use in counselling and psychotherapy to help people understand grief, loss, emotional wellbeing, and life transitions. You may find these helpful alongside this article:
Together, these guides form part of My Therapy Roadmap; a collection of practical resources designed to help you better understand yourself and navigate grief, loss and life's many transitions at your own pace.
My Approach

As a qualified NCPS Accredited Registrant and ACC counsellor and psychotherapist, I support adults navigating grief, loss and life transitions, including bereavement, relationship changes, menopause, pregnancy and infant loss, pet bereavement, caring responsibilities, retirement, anxiety, depression, burnout, and the emotional impact of life-changing health diagnoses and long-term health conditions. I offer counselling from my private therapy cabin in Littlehampton, West Sussex, walk and talk therapy in nature, and secure online counselling across the UK, so together we can find an approach that feels safe, comfortable and right for you.
Alongside counselling, I often draw upon psycho-educational resources and practical tools that can help bring understanding to experiences that may otherwise feel confusing or overwhelming. Together, we can work towards understanding your grief and finding a way forward that feels meaningful and authentic to you.
Taking the First Step
Support starts with a conversation.
Beginning counselling can feel like a big step, especially if you've never spoken to a therapist before. That's why I aim to make the process as straightforward and welcoming as possible.
You can book a free 15-minute consultation online at a time that suits you, with instant access to my real-time availability. Appointment confirmations, reminders, secure payment and online session links are all handled automatically, making the process simple and stress-free.
If online booking isn't your preference, that's absolutely fine. You're welcome to contact me through my website, by email, text or phone, and I'll be happy to help you arrange an appointment.
Whether you're looking for support with grief, loss, anxiety, depression, burnout or another life transition, we'll begin with a conversation about what's brought you here and what you're hoping for from counselling.
