The Silent Shore
When life's storms have left you feeling weathered & adrift
Exploring depression, numbness, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion
There are times in life when everything can feel strangely distant.
You may find yourself moving through the days on autopilot, disconnected from the things that once brought comfort, purpose, or joy. The world continues around you, yet you feel somehow apart from it. For some, this experience is linked to depression. For others, it may follow grief, burnout, trauma, anxiety, loss, or significant life changes.
The Empty Beach represents those seasons when the tide seems to have gone out, leaving a landscape that feels quiet, exposed, and unfamiliar.
You may recognise some of these experiences:
Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
Losing interest in things you once enjoyed
Feeling stuck, flat, or unmotivated
Persistent sadness or emptiness
Finding it difficult to concentrate or make decisions
Feeling exhausted, even after rest
Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities
A sense of hopelessness about the future
Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
Living with a constant sense of worry, dread, or unease
The Broken Boat
Along the shoreline sits a broken boat.
Boats are designed to carry us across water, helping us navigate changing conditions and uncertain seas. Yet there are times when life's storms, losses, disappointments, or overwhelming demands leave us feeling as though our boat has been damaged.
Perhaps you are working harder than ever just to stay afloat. Perhaps anxiety keeps you constantly scanning the horizon for danger. Perhaps depression has left you feeling stranded on the shore, unable to imagine setting sail again.
The broken boat is not a symbol of failure. It is a reminder that difficult experiences can leave their mark on all of us.
Just as a damaged boat can be repaired, strengthened, and made seaworthy again, healing is possible, even when it feels distant.
How Counselling Can Help
Explore feelings of depression, anxiety, or emotional numbness
Understand the impact of grief, loss, trauma, or life transitions
Identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck
Develop strategies for managing overwhelming thoughts and emotions
Reconnect with your strengths, values, and sense of self
Build self-compassion and resilience
Find hope during difficult seasons
Take small, manageable steps towards change
A Gentle Return
Healing rarely happens all at once.
Often, it begins with small moments: noticing a feeling, sharing a burden, finding words for an experience that has felt impossible to explain. Over time, these moments can create movement where there once felt like only stillness.
The Empty Beach is not the end of the journey. It is a place to pause, reflect, and gather strength before taking the next step forward.
Even when the shoreline feels deserted, you do not have to navigate it alone.
Helpful Resources
Every person's experience is unique, but understanding what you're experiencing can often make it feel a little less overwhelming. The resources below explain some of the ideas and models I regularly use in counselling and psychotherapy to help people understand grief, loss, emotional wellbeing, and life transitions. You may find these helpful alongside this article:
Together, these guides form part of My Therapy Roadmap; a collection of practical resources designed to help you better understand yourself and navigate grief, loss and life's many transitions at your own pace.
My Approach

As a qualified NCPS Accredited Registrant and ACC counsellor and psychotherapist, I support adults navigating grief, loss and life transitions, including bereavement, relationship changes, menopause, pregnancy and infant loss, pet bereavement, caring responsibilities, retirement, anxiety, depression, burnout, and the emotional impact of life-changing health diagnoses and long-term health conditions. I offer counselling from my private therapy cabin in Littlehampton, West Sussex, walk and talk therapy in nature, and secure online counselling across the UK, so together we can find an approach that feels safe, comfortable and right for you.
Alongside counselling, I often draw upon psycho-educational resources and practical tools that can help bring understanding to experiences that may otherwise feel confusing or overwhelming. Together, we can work towards understanding your grief and finding a way forward that feels meaningful and authentic to you.
